Fredericksburg, situated on the Rappahannock River, has long been a crossroads for trade and a seat of political and social change. The surrounding counties of Westmoreland, Stafford, and Spotsylvania have been important from Colonial times to the present as some of the fastest-growing counties in the U.S.

Fredericksburg Port Record:
Port records reveal the commercial side to Fredericksburg's growth in the 19th-century. While Fredericksburg is well beyond the point of navigation now, with the exception of boats with a shallow draft, it was a thriving port town in Colonial times.

Sanborn Insurance Maps:
From the latter half of the 19th-century through the first half of the 20th, the Sanborn Insurance Company made detailed maps of many U. S. cities, including the City of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The maps clearly document the growth of Fredericksburg and the changes to the city's buildings with regard to their shape, expansion, or demolition, as well as to their use.
